The objective of the project was to:<\/span>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Test the implementation of a Digital Citizen Engagement Platform that will source diverse citizen views on policy and legislative issues.<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Capacitate the youth with a deeper understanding of the issue (focus area) that is critical to generating constructive and meaningful responses.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It gathered 26 youths with diverse backgrounds from all over the country and generated 24 seed responses including graduates, to learn about climate change and brainstorm ideas of mitigation and adaptation to the global issue creating potential solutions of how Bhutan can address climate change.\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/bcmd.bt\/yibhutan\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/IMG_9725-scaled.jpg\"><img class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-2558\" src=\"http:\/\/bcmd.bt\/yibhutan\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/IMG_9725-1024x575.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"575\" \/><\/a>\t\t\t\t\t\t <\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t <div role=\"tabpanel\" class=\"tab-pane \" id=\"tabs_desc_2359_2\">\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\u00a0\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bcmd.bt\/yibhutan\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/YI-Winter-pic-1-.jpeg\"><img class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-2549\" src=\"http:\/\/bcmd.bt\/yibhutan\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/YI-Winter-pic-1--1024x683.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><\/a>The 2022 Winter Youth Initiative brought together 26 youths from various educational institutions, including graduates, to learn about climate change and brainstorm on Bhutan\u2019s response to mitigating and adapting to the global issue.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">An eclectic mix of 6 speakers from government agencies and CSOs, independent consultants and researchers shed light on issues of urban development, transportation, industries, agriculture, and waste, their relation to climate change, and existing opportunities to address climate change in Bhutan.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The sensitization on climate change enhanced the youth\u2019s understanding of the topic and highlighted the need for consulting youth on this topic as their future will greatly be impacted as a result of climate change. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n\u00a0\t\t\t\t\t\t <\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t <div role=\"tabpanel\" class=\"tab-pane \" id=\"tabs_desc_2359_3\">\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bcmd.bt\/yibhutan\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/271858122_4897237703632895_6984742047003751258_n.jpeg\"><img class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-2551\" src=\"http:\/\/bcmd.bt\/yibhutan\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/271858122_4897237703632895_6984742047003751258_n-1024x575.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"575\" \/><\/a><\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\"Until today, I was oblivious to the adverse impact that climate change is already having on the rest of the world,\" said Gyanzo, a student of CNR. Similarly, other participants expressed feelings of sadness knowing how people elsewhere are already bearing the brunt of climate change, and of guilt and anger at themselves for ignorantly aggravating climate change through their everyday acts and habits.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The consolidated 24 solutions from this two-day exercise were uploaded on Youth Conversations ( a digital engagement platform) that were live for about 2 months. In total, 7,359 people engaged on the platform to vote on the proposed solutions and provide additional responses to \u201cWhat should Bhutan do to tackle climate change\u201d.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The diverse responses range from talking about amending policies to mitigate climate change such as increasing royalties on the mining industry to adapting innovative planning such as including climate risk scenarios in local development plans.
